Increasing Classroom Dialogue Through Digital Backchannels | Nortel B
Dialogue aids understanding for both the teacher and student. What do students know? How well do they understand? Are they thinking critically? Answering these questions requires us to hear from the students, but how to we get to hear from all 30 students in a 60 minute class period? You can increase space for dialogue in the classroom with digital backchannel conversations. These conversations maintain a real-time online discussion simultaneously to live, spoken remarks. This session will provide practical tools, tips, and ideas for making digital backchannels work in the classroom. During the presentation we will conduct a backchannel conversation so participants can see how it works! No prior knowledge of experience necessary.
Facilitated by Rebekah Davis, Digital Learning Graduate Assistant , & Victoria Harris, Social Studies Teacher at Smith Middle School in Chapel Hill

Design, Build, and Firm up Your Project Based Learning Frame | Nortel A
Project-based learning (PBL) is an exciting way to fully immerse students in an authentic learning experience that can yield incredible results. However the idea of so many potentially “moving parts” can leave teachers wondering how and where to start. To allow for true student-driven processes, teachers must be comfortable with the idea of establishing firm foundations and facilitating students as they guide themselves. This workshop will help all educators strengthen the basic structure of their PBL units while bolstering their own skills with digital tools that can be used with PBL in mind. Participants will leave with ideas for driving questions and possible product and assessment options to frame up their facilitation of students’ learning.
For participants that identify as 'Moderate'. Facilitated by Emily Hargrove and Amanda Johnson, Teaching and Learning Coaches, Four Oaks Middle School, Johnston Co. Schools.
